What to bring to Your Tax Appointment
Here is a list of items to bring to your tax appointment. Preparing for even a few moments can grant you increased tax savings. You may not require every item listed, so don’t worry if you don’t have everything available. We merely wish to make your experience quick and effective.


Social Security Card(s) for taxpayers and spouses
If you have changed your name, inform us of the last name that the Social Security Administration uses for you.

Social Security Card(s) and Date(s) of Birth for Each of Your Children

Current Driver’s License
This is to verify your identify

Last Year’s Federal and State Tax Returns
These can be helpful in calculating this year’s return, but you won’t need them if you are a prior client of America’s Tax Office. All our locations have access to your prior tax returns that you’ve filed with America’s Tax Office, so we can continue to serve you even after you move.

Wage Statements - W2 Forms
If you haven’t received these income statements from your employer(s) by February 1st, contact your employer(s). Employers are required by law to send W-2’s by January 31st.

Child Care Expenses and Information for Provider(s)
Provider’s name, address, and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). If the provider is an individual, a Social Security Number or EIN number is acceptable. Total expenses amount for the year is needed.

Dental, Eye Care, and Other Medical Expenses
This may be deductible if your expenses accounted for more than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (income minus federal adjustments allowed).

Charitable Contribution Summaries (Cash and Non-Cash)
Bring a record for contributions you made directly and through employer withholdings. You MUST keep written receipts from each charitable organization. Use fair market value for non-cash charitable donations (vehicles, clothing, or real property).

Mortgage or Home Equity Loan Interest Paid - 1098 Form
If you do not have this form, you can check for the information in your mortgage bill (look for interest you paid in the previous year). Contact your mortgage holder directly if you haven’t received your 1098 by February 1st.

Real Estate or Personal Property Taxes
If your mortgage company pays real estate taxes on your behalf with an escrow fund, they will send proof of payments on Form 1098 by January 31st.

Record of Purchase or Sale of Real Residence
You must report gains from selling your main residence, but you may be able to exclude $250,000 ($500,000 if Married Filing Jointly) of your gain from your total income.

Unreimbursed Employment-Related Expenses
Business expenses that were not already reimbursed by your company may be deductible. Keep records of these expenses and bring them to your appointment.

Educational Expenses
College credit tuition for any family member may provide tax credits. Bring the amount you paid for higher education (1098-T) to your appointment.

Educator’s Expenses (Teachers, Counselors, Principals, etc.)
If an educator has logged 900 hours of work in the school year, you may deduct up to $250 of job-relevant expenses.

Pension or Retirement Income - 1099-R Form
You should receive this form from the payer by January 31st.

Investment or Divident Income Statements - 1099-INT and 1099-DIV Forms
You should receive the 1099-INT Form by January 31st if you earned interest income on any of your investment accounts in the prior year. You should receive the 1099-DIV Form by January 31st if you received dividend income from stocks or funds in the prior year.

Students Loan Interest - 1098-E Form

Social Security Income - SSA-1099 Form
Form provided by the Social Security Administration.

Unemployment Income - 1099-G Form
The State should send you the 1099-G Form by January 31st, so contact your state office if you have not received this summary of your unemployment compensation.

Sales of Stocks or Bonds - 1099-B Form
In addition to the 1099-B Form, bring brokerage statements (with dates for bought and sold) and receipt confirmations (cost basis and fees paid).

Self-Employed Business/Farm Income and Expenses - 1099-MISC Form
Bring all accounting forms including the 1099-MISC, such as accounting records showing your income totals and expense items.

Lottery or Gambling Winnings - W-2G Form
If you receive more than $600 in gambling winnings, the payer should send you this form. This will show the amount you won and how much was withheld.

Lottery or Gambling Losses
You can use gambling losses as deductions on your income tax return up to the amount of gambling winnings. Keep a written record that includes the date, gambling type, location, and amount of wager, and your losses and winnings.

Income and Expenses from Rental Property
Report any money your received from rent as income. Certain expenses are deductible for acquiring, maintaining, insuring, and operating your rental property.

Alimony Received or Paid
Receiving alimony is taxable income, and paying alimony is tax deductible. Child support is not taxable or deductible. Bring the recipient’s Social Security Number if you paid alimony.
